Joan of Arc
She was a tremendous help in the Hundred Years War. Joan of Arc was born a peasant girl in Domremy, France on January 6, 1412. She worked on a farm with her family. At 13 she claimed god told her to dress as a man and join the army. In 1429 the voices told her to go see the future ruler of France, Charles VII. She convinced him that it was her divine mission to help save France. Joan of Arc was captured and sold to the English during a battle near Paris in 1430. She was burned at the stake in 1431 because the men thought that she was a witch talking to the devil.

St. Thomas Aquinas; priest and doctor of a Church, patron of all universities and his students. His birth day is January 28th. He was born toward the end of the year 1226. He was the son of Landulph, Count of Aquino. Aquinas’s parents did not want him to join the Order of St. Dominic, but he did not listen to their wishes and joined anyway. In 1243, at the age of seventeen, he joined the domicans of Naples. God conferred upon him the gift of perfect chastity, which gave him the title of the "Angelic Doctor".
After four years of teaching he was sent to Paris. The saint was then a priest. At the age of thirty-one, he received his doctorate. St. Thomas was one of the greatest and most influential theologians of all time. He was canonized in 1323 and declared Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius V. The study of his works was long used as a core of the required program of study for those seeking ordination as priests or deacons, as well as for those in religious formation and for other students of the sacred disciplines.
He helped push towards the Renaissance by reintroducing the philosophy of Aristotle to the West. His writing used Aristotle's philosophy to interpret Christianity. This was a very materialistic philosophy, compared to the philosophy of Plato, which up to his time dominated Christian philosophy. (His sources were Jewish and Muslim thinkers from Spain who themselves rediscovered Aristotle.). In short, he helped to shatter the medieval world-view, leading to the Renaissance.
